ABOUT THE SHOW

The New Home Show is all about do-it-yourself home building. We call it the ultimate do-it-yourself project. The producer originally developed The New Home Show for one of the major cable networks. He knew that do-it-yourself homebuilding is one of the best kept secrets in America. It was something that he wanted to share with a great number of people. He felt that if the viewers were empowered with the knowledge of home building as a do-it yourselfer they could derive great benefit from that knowledge. The reason that most people don't get involved in do-it-yourself home building is not because they don't want too; rather it's because they simply don't know how to. Do-it-yourself homebuilding doesn't mean you spend your time hammering, nailing, and painting or doing the actual construction of the house. (Unless you want too) You must understand how home building contractors work. Home building contractors don't usually build houses. Often the people doing the actual building aren't even on the home building contractors payroll. Surprised? Most people are. Let's look at the word "contractor". If you look up contractor in the dictionary you would find it to mean "to contract or arrange for". That's what a contractor does. He contracts and arranges for different companies and individuals to build a house. A lot of builders don't even lift a hammer--yet they are able to get a whole house built. The contractor is able to do this because he has the knowledge to plan for and arrange the building of a new house. That's not to say that home building is easy. As you probably know by now, nothing worthwhile is ever easy. However it doesn't have to be difficult either. Homebuilding is mostly planning and arranging. You plan out the house and you hire sub-contractors to build what you have planned. The New Home Show takes you step by step through the home building process. The first series is entitled "The Wedge Plantation". The beginning show starts with a vacant lot and the last show ends up with a fully furnished completed home. You'll see the Wedge Plantation being built over 18 shows. You'll also have the opportunity to order the Southern Living Magazine house plans for the Wedge Plantation. The show is designed with the viewer in mind. The hosts are not homebuilders--nor are they actors. This allows the show to be seen from the average person's point of view. You'll meet a lot of different sub-contractors along the way. The hosts will ask the types of questions that you might ask if you were on the set. You'll see some new products on The New Home Show. Some of these products are being shown on television for the first time. We're pleased to show you these new products. The New Home Show is fed to every PBS station in the country.
